Christmas market "Gemeentegrot", Valkenburg
The Christmas Markets open several weeks before Christmas (November/December). The Christmas Markets are inmensely popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and increasingly in South Limburg, The Netherlands. At the Christmas Markets, which usually are held in open air, there are various stands, sometimes in the shape of small houses, which sell an abundance of Christmas decoration, food and drinks. One of the well known Christmas Markets in The Netherlands are the markets in the caves of Valkenburg: Gemeentegrot and Fluweelgrot (at 3km distance from Hotel Kadampa Holland). These naturally warm, underground mazes of market stands sell Christmas decoration as well as other more regular market items. Visiting the caves around the holiday season is a pleasant way to get into the mood of Christmas. It is recommended to combine your visit to the Christmas caves in Valkenburg with a visit to larger Maastricht.
Christmas Parade
From November 21 to December 23 every Wednesday evening at 19:00 pm and every Saturday evening at 19.30h a magical Christmas Parade of decorated and illuminated wagons drives through the centre of Valkenburg. Besides the wagons, the parade is accompanied by numerous dancers and entertainers, and welcoming Christmas music.
Route d'Amuse
(November 20 until January 3. Daily from 12 to 18 hours)
For the 2010 Christmas season once more two tongue pleasing walks have been organized by Route d'Amuse Foundation Valkenburg Christmas City. The routes are equally in distance; for both routes, you need about 4 hours to stroll around 5 kilometer of foot paths and enjoy five amuses. The routes also provide much information about the history and actuality of the places you visit. The routes are available at the VVV Zuid-Limburg in Valkenburg.
